- Do I have to live in the residence halls?
-
The university requires freshmen to live in a university residence hall for two academic-year semesters (fall/spring) provided space is available. (Summer term does not count as an academic semester.)
Please be advised that freshmen who apply by mid-May can usually get housing for the upcoming fall term. Due to heavy demand for limited space, there is no guarantee that space will be available for the fall term for freshman applying after mid-May. If this is the case, affected students will be given information regarding wait lists and/or off-campus housing.

- Are there exceptions to the policy?
-
There are a few narrow exceptions to the policy: a student wants to reside at home and live with parents/guardians, provided that home is a reasonable distance from campus; or a student is experiencing highly unusual or extenuating circumstances, which are of such a nature that if the live-in policy were enforced, it would not be possible or reasonable for the student to continue at the university.

- Why does the university have a first-year housing policy?
-
The university has a long-term commitment to the freshman live-in policy because research demonstrates that the group living environment within the residence halls affords a special opportunity for freshman students to learn, mature, and grow, with the help of special programs and activities oriented toward freshman needs. Living in proximity with other students who have varied ethnic backgrounds, differing values, and who represent diverse geographic areas, is in itself a significant educational experience which cannot be duplicated in any classroom. Most students new to Boulder are not familiar with rental rates, distances, leases, types of accommodations available, etc. top

- Is there an alcohol policy?
-
Yes. Any student or visitor who is under the legal drinking age of 21 may not consume or possess alcohol. Individuals who are of legal drinking age may possess and consume alcohol only in the privacy of their room with the door closed.
-
- Can my friends or boyfriend or girlfriend spend the night?
-
Yes, provided that you and your roommate(s) agree on this ahead of time, and you register your guest at the residence hall office.
-
- What is the curfew?
-
There is no curfew.
