SPECTRUM A Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Ally Living and Learning Community

rainbow bands

Moving on campus for the first time can be difficult, especially when you consider how many adjustments new students experience. Consider the additional possible impacts of identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer during this process.

Think about your living environment on campus and what you envision it looks like. What types of people will be in your living community? How will your living community enhance your education? How comfortable will you be in your new community? If you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, or someone who is passionate about equal rights for all students, this community is the option for you.

The Program

Spectrum occupies a part of one floor of Hallett and is a part of the Hallett Hall Diversity Program. It offers a variety of social and educational activities, including activities with CU-Boulder faculty and staff, field trips, and an introduction to GLBT Studies academic course. This program provides leadership opportunities and a supportive environment for acquiring personal awareness of your own-and others'-culture and values. The academic course is taught in Hallett Hall as an option within the Hallett Diversity Program. Spectrum students have first priority to enroll in this course.

The Living

Spectrum is designed to provide a supportive place for all who identify along the continuum of sexuality, including gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer people, and their allies. It also provides a place to focus on issues and explore the depth of the human condition as it relates to sexual orientation in an academic setting.

Staffing and Support

The GLBT Resource Center provides support for Spectrum. The mission of the center is to serve as an advocacy office for GLBT students, staff, faculty, and alumni. This support is provided to ensure the success of students at CU-Boulder. Students who participate in this program have full access to the center's considerable expertise and support.

The Hallett diversity coordinator facilitates a nurturing living environment for the students involved in the program. Along with the diversity mentors, the Hallett diversity coordinator helps translate the experiences of the classroom to the experiences of the living community. In conjunction with the Spectrum Program, the Hallett Hall Diversity Program gives each student in the building an opportunity to explore the additional aspects of diversity. These experiences serve as a natural link for all students in Hallett Hall, both in and out of the program.
